February 8, 2021, AUSTIN, Texas — Stoplight, the API design company, today announced an $11M round of follow-on Series A funding. Co-led by Next Coast Ventures and Bill Wood Ventures who also co-led the company’s funding in January 2020, the current round brings the company’s total funding to date to $21M. Stoplight plans to utilize the funding to add engineering capacity and introduce new marketing and customer engagement for a growing audience.
“Stoplight has shown phenomenal growth over the past year,” said Mike Smerklo, co-founder and managing director of Next Coast Ventures. “They are truly best-in-class for API design and development and are poised to bring their solution to a large and growing market.”
This round of funding is the first under the leadership of Stoplight’s chief executive officer Steve Rodda, who joined the company in July of 2020. The company’s expansion includes making several key hires, including the company’s first chief technology officer Jason Harmon, chief operations officer Jason Miller, and chief marketing officer Ann Boyd.
Rodda commented, “These are exciting times for Stoplight. Building on the incredible innovation and vision of our founder Marc MacLeod, I am thrilled to bring additional talent to help realize our growth potential as we lead a much-needed ‘design-first’ revolution in APIs.”
“APIs must work together to be effective and, to do that, developers must have an easy way to design and collaborate on them. Stoplight is committed to empower developers with a strategic API design platform that offers the easiest way to create, prototype, and then document APIs.”
As the number of software developers continues a dramatic rise globally (Evans Data Corp), so too does the number of internet and connected devices. More than ever, software applications are interdependent on a common framework to interact: the Application Programming Interface (API).
Stoplight was founded by Marc MacLeod in 2015 with the goal of enabling organizations to reclaim a strategic, intentional approach to APIs. Launched in the fall of 2019, Stoplight’s flagship product Stoplight Studio quickly became the category’s best-in-class tool to design, develop and document APIs. In just six months since the June 2020 release of the Stoplight platform, enabling better integration of API design with existing workflows and self-service sign-ups, the company increased active users by more than 200%.
Stoplight has empowered developers from leading global enterprises across financial services, technology, transportation, and more to develop and maintain consistent API designs, development practices, and documentation. With more than 600 customers worldwide and growing, the company offers instant access to the platform for trial at no charge, and rapid expansion on an as-needed basis.
